New Project- Making Playground Safe at GSLC

This is from Christina Valente:

I have a 'to-do' for your group. There is a fire pole on the playground
that is not 'code' since that particular apparatus is only for ages 5 and
up. Can you guys discuss removing it and boarding up the opening? The
preschool will gladly reimburse your costs for materials (and maybe even
some liquid libation:-)).

Thanks!
Christina

Anyone wanna help me get that sucker outta there? Let me know what time will work for you.

Shawn

Hold on fellas. We do not need to take the pole down. All we need to do is put up a wall on that end of the 2nd floor of the play area so that the kids can not walk off the edge. Charlotte tells me that the younger kids like to spin around the pole - from the ground level. Again the safty hazard that needs to be fixed is just to close off the open end of the 2nd level. This will stop access to the pole.
I am going over in a few minutes to take a second look and see that wi needed to build a barrier.
Thanks,
Brad.

First off, we have sent an email to the Preschool folks who were involved with the inspection that resulted in this violation being raised. They will tell me whether the pole itself is the problem, or if just the opening from that platform is it. If we just nee to block the opening it is straight forward (replace the horizontal board to span the opening and add vertical bars. I measured and 3 verticals will suffice to keep the required spacing. Also, the platform that extends from the opening can easily be removed via 6 screws.).
Now, if the pole also needs to be removed, then we still have to do the above to close off the opening but also need to dig out the pole which is embedded in cement.
Hopefully the 3 pictures I attached actually come through. From them you can see what I am talking about.

Thanks,
Brad.

Great work Brad. Let's not do more work than needed based on a knee jerk alarm. I've got tools, and (maybe!) time on the weekend to help. Let us know the final verdict.

The reply from Anne Boggs is that we just need to close off the opening. The pole can stay. I will make a run to Home Depot in the next day or so for the supplies and then let you know what help is needed. It seems simple, but, famous last words and all that :-)
